The Kailua-Kona Public Library will be open on Monday and closed Oct. 13, because of the 2012 Ironman World Championship presented by MyList.
Lion’s statewide food drive is Saturday
The Hawaii Lions of District 50 as part of their S.O.S. — Seven Days of Service — will be out in force throughout the state Saturday. S.O.S. is a weeklong visible presence with more than 1,800 supporting Hawaii members taking on several large community service projects. The Hawaii Lions Statewide Food Drive is one of these missions and will be the grand finale of the S.O.S.
In partnership with the Hawaii Foodbank, the Lions will be collecting canned goods only, which include the Hawaii Foodbank’s most wanted foods: meats and tuna, canned meals, soups, vegetables and fruits.
On the Big Island, donations will go to The Food Basket. Collections will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at KTA in Kona Coast Shopping Center, 74-5594 Palani Road and KTA in Keauhou Shopping Center, 78-6831 Alii Drive. Other food drives are scheduled at ChoiceMart, 82-6066 Mamalahoa Highway, Captain Cook and Sack-N-Save, 75-5595 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona.
Hospital auxiliary meeting Monday
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary meets at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital’s lower level conference room. Suggestions are being accepted for board members for 2013.
Everyone is invited to the weekly bake sales held from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.

Coffee group
plans dinner, tours
Coffee farmers and the public are invited to the Kona Coffee Council dinner celebration and tours.
The Nov. 8 dinner begins at 6 p.m. with no-host cocktails. A buffet dinner is served at 7, followed by live and silent auctions. Tickets are $60.
Farm and mill bus tours are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6 and 9 and depart from Hale Halawai. The tours visit three working Kona coffee farms in North and South Kona. Each day will feature different farms. The cost is $50, which includes transportation and lunch.

Halloween craft
class scheduled
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Kona is conducting a free Halloween craft class for youth 8 to 18 years at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona. The class will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 24.
Participants will decorate/paint a preformed mask to be used on Halloween night or as an ornamental display. There is a limited number of masks, so early registration is recommended.

for NFB meeting
Kellen Kashiwa, a low-vision specialist, is the featured speaker for the 1 p.m. Sunday meeting of the National Federation of the Blind West Hawaii chapter at Mokuaikaua Church, across from Hulihee Palace, in Kailua-Kona.
Kashiwa, on staff at the Retina Institute of Hawaii in Honolulu, will discuss treatments and technologies available for dealing with low vision.
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, provides an opportunity to learn how to optimize diminished vision and how to prevent further vision loss.
